Constipation Linked to 73% Increased Risk of Cognitive Decline
Less frequent bowel movements are associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline and poorer cognitive function, a recent study has found. Overall, constipation was linked to the equivalent of 3 increased years of brain aging and a 73% higher risk of cognitive decline.
The study involved data from over 110,000 people, including information on bowel movement frequency and both subjective and objective assessments of cognitive function. Constipation was defined as a bowel movement every three or more days.
Not only was constipation linked to poorer brain function as compared to having a bowel movement every day, the researchers also found that participants who had fewer butyrate-producing bacteria and fewer fiber-digesting bacteria in their gut were at a higher risk for both constipation and poorer cognitive function.
“These results stress the importance of clinicians discussing gut health, especially constipation, with their older patients,” said Dong Wang, senior study author. “Interventions for preventing constipation and improving gut health include adopting healthy diets enriched with high-fiber and high-polyphenol foods…drinking plenty of water every day; and having regular physical activity.”
Dust from Artificial Stone Countertops Can Be Deadly
Exposure to dust from engineered (synthetic) quartz countertops is causing irreversible, potentially deadly lung disease in workers involved in the manufacturing process, a new study has found. It has already led to fatalities as well as the need for lung transplants.
The disease is called silicosis and is known to affect those who cut, grind, or polish natural stone. However, the dust from engineered stone has proven to be far more dangerous and deadly due to a higher silica content and the addition of polymer resins and dyes.
Given the high demand for engineered quartz countertops, cases of silicosis continue to occur at a fairly high rate. Latino immigrant workers are the most affected in the U.S. Countries like Australia have considered banning these countertops or introducing new regulations to prevent silicosis, but no measures have been taken yet.
So far, the risks seem to be low for homeowners who have engineered stone countertops. However, the dangers increase any time dust is created from the countertops— if they are cut in the home or removed during remodel, for example.
